Why Your Upstairs Stays Hot: Roof, Insulation and Glazing

The shutters are closed, the house was ventilated early, and the upstairs bedrooms are still too hot to sleep in. Learn why heat builds under the roof, whether insulation keeps a house cool in summer, and how glazing and external shading decide how an upper floor behaves.

You have closed the shutters, ventilated early, and the upstairs bedrooms are still too hot to sleep in.

Nothing about the routine was wrong. The western shutters went across before the sun reached them, the house was opened at first light and shut again by nine, and no window was left open into the afternoon heat.

Downstairs it worked. Upstairs it did not.

When that happens, the problem has moved from how the house is used to how it is built.

Shutters, ventilation and shade decide how much heat enters through the openings, which is the subject of How to Keep a House Cool in the South of France Without Making It Dark. What the roof, the insulation and the glass do with the rest is a separate question.

It is worth knowing which one you are dealing with before spending anything.

Start at the Roof

The roof is often one of the most exposed surfaces of the house. Depending on its orientation, large sections can receive direct sun for hours with far less protection than the windows below.

By late afternoon the structure beneath has absorbed a great deal of that heat, and it releases it slowly downward for hours after sunset. This is why an attic bedroom can feel worse at eleven at night than at six in the evening, and why the upper floor is often the last part of the house to cool.

If the ground floor is tolerable and the floor above is not, look up before you look at the windows. If the difference between floors is pronounced, a large part of the answer may lie above the ceiling rather than at the windows.

A poorly insulated roof space will undo good shutter discipline every summer.

What Insulation Does

Does insulation keep a house cool in summer, or does it only hold warmth in during winter?

It does both, because it is not doing what most people assume. Insulation does not cool anything. It slows the rate at which heat crosses from one side of a surface to the other.

In winter that keeps warmth inside. In summer it delays the roof's heat from reaching the rooms below, which can make a substantial difference in an older Mediterranean house, particularly when bedrooms sit directly beneath the roof.

Where it goes matters. Insulating at the rafters keeps a converted loft within the protected envelope, while insulating across the attic floor is simpler and cheaper and works well when the space above stays unused and ventilated.

Continuity matters as much as headline thickness. Gaps, compressed material and poorly treated hatches or junctions create weak points, while the right insulation build-up also depends on the roof construction and whether the space above is occupied.

Roof Windows Need Shade

A roof window faces the sky directly, so it takes sun for longer and at a more punishing angle than any window set in a wall.

Interior blinds on these openings are rarely enough. By the time the light has passed through the glass the heat is already in the room, and a fabric blind traps much of it against the pane.

External blinds, shutters or awnings fitted above the glass do considerably more, because they stop the sun before it arrives. In a converted attic bedroom this one change can make a surprising difference to whether the room remains usable in August.

It is the same principle that governs every other opening in the house. It simply matters more here.

Bigger Glass, More Heat

Large windows are usually the second cause, particularly on recently renovated houses.

Replacing several small openings with one wide sheet of glass improves the view and brings in more winter light. It also increases the surface through which summer sun can enter, and on a western elevation that alone can make a room unusable by five o'clock.

Modern glazing helps but does not solve it. Insulated units reduce the heat conducting through the glass, and solar control glazing cuts part of the radiation, though the stronger specifications can slightly dull the light.

When replacing windows, thermal insulation is only part of the specification. The amount of solar energy the glazing allows through matters just as much in a room exposed to strong summer sun.

Even good solar-control glazing works best when it is combined with exterior shade on the most exposed openings.

Design Shade Together

The most common renovation mistake is treating solar protection as a finishing touch.

Shading works best when it is designed at the same time as the glazing, because its depth and position depend on the size of the opening and the angle of the sun it has to block.

When shade is added afterwards, its dimensions are often chosen according to the terrace or facade rather than the path of the sun. A pergola can look substantial and still fail to shade the glass at the hours when protection matters most.

Lightweight Construction

A lightweight house behaves differently from one with substantial thermal mass.

It responds more quickly to changes in temperature, warming faster when solar protection is poor but also releasing heat more quickly once conditions improve.

That is not necessarily a disadvantage. A well-insulated lightweight house with good exterior shade and controlled ventilation can perform very well in summer.

It simply relies more heavily on those elements being designed correctly.

Before You Commit

Before ordering insulation, windows or a cooling unit, establish which part of the building is actually failing.

Compare the ground floor with the top floor at midnight rather than at midday, and note how large the difference is.

Check whether the roof space is insulated at all, and whether that insulation runs continuously.

Look at your largest western window and ask whether anything shades it from the outside.

If you are replacing glazing, decide where the shade will go before you order the glass.

Ask whether the room still overheats on a day when the shutters were managed perfectly. If it does, the fabric needs work.

A house built or renovated with summer conditions in mind asks much less of its occupants. The shutters and shade still move with the day, but they are supporting the building rather than compensating for it.
