The room sold you the house.

Large windows, pale walls, light arriving from two sides by mid-morning. In spring it feels generous, the garden almost entering the room.

Then July comes. By eleven the room is warm, and by four the sofa beside the western window is unusable.

The terrace outside has been heating for hours, the glass is hot to the touch, and the light that once felt uplifting now presses on everything it reaches.

So you close the shutters. The temperature settles, but the house goes dark.

The rooms you chose for their light become dim and sealed, cut off from the garden.

This is the real difficulty of a bright house in the South of France. The problem is not how to block the heat.

It is how to control it without losing the light that made the house appealing in the first place.

A comfortable Mediterranean home is not kept permanently dark. It is managed by orientation, by the movement of the sun, and by the hour.

Some openings are protected while others stay open, and some rooms are used in the morning while others come into their own later. The house is allowed to change rather than forced to behave the same way from dawn to dusk.

Heat and glare are often confused, though they are not the same problem.

Stop Heat Outside

The most effective way to keep a room cool is to stop direct sun from reaching the window in the first place.

Once it passes through the glass, the window, floor and furniture behind it begin to warm. An interior curtain can soften glare, but by then part of the heat is already inside.

That is why exterior protection almost always does more than anything fitted within.

Exterior shutters work well on ordinary windows because they can be closed fully, partly, or only on the side currently taking the sun. Adjustable external blinds give similar control and are easier on newer houses with large glazed openings.

Western sun arrives low and from the side, so it needs shutters, screens or planting rather than an overhang alone. A well-placed tree or deciduous vine can shade a wall in summer and let the light back through once the leaves fall.

The terrace is part of this too. A paved area in full sun stores heat all afternoon and keeps radiating it toward the house long after the sun has moved on.

Shading outside the room, then, is not only about the terrace being pleasant. It changes the temperature indoors.

Shutters by Orientation

"Close the shutters during the day" is incomplete advice. Taken literally, it darkens the whole house, when usually only one or two elevations are exposed at any given hour.

The useful approach is to read the house one side at a time.

East-facing rooms take the sun early and may need their shutters closed or angled in the morning. Once the sun has moved on, the shutters can reopen and the room will often remain comfortable for the rest of the day.

South-facing openings get strong midday light, but the high summer sun makes deep reveals, overhangs and pergolas particularly effective. The aim is to keep direct sun from reaching far into the room rather than to seal it.

West-facing rooms are the hardest. The afternoon sun is low, intense and persistent, and it arrives after the walls and roof have already been warming for hours, so western shutters need closing before the room feels hot, not after.

North-facing windows get little direct summer sun and can often stay open to daylight while the hotter sides are protected.

The house rarely needs the same treatment everywhere: protect the elevation under pressure and borrow light from a cooler one.

Filter, Don't Block

Between a fully open window and a closed solid shutter lies a wide middle, and most comfortable rooms live there.

Louvred shutters suit Mediterranean houses because they block direct sun while letting some light and air through, protecting the opening without cutting the room off from outside. Adjustable external blinds go further still, their slats reset through the day as the sun moves.

Inside, woven blinds, pale curtains and sheer linen soften whatever light remains and take care of glare and privacy. They can trim some solar gain, especially when light-coloured and closely fitted, but they should not be asked to do the exterior's job.

It helps to keep the three needs separate: solar protection limits heat and works best outside the glass, daylight control shapes the light inside, and privacy is a question of its own.

A good room might use all three and still keep the cooler window opposite open to the garden. The point is not to make every opening behave alike, but to keep one source of comfortable light while the exposed side is protected.

Ventilate When Cooler

Air helps only when it moves in the right direction at the right temperature.

The common summer mistake is leaving windows open all afternoon. When the outdoor air is hotter than the air inside, an open window is not cooling the house; it is warming it.

The rhythm usually starts early, while the night air is still cool. Open windows on opposite sides so the air crosses the house rather than entering and leaving by the same opening, and leave internal doors open along that route to carry off the heat stored overnight.

In a house of several floors, open low on the cool side and high above it, so rising warm air escapes and draws cooler air through below.

Close the windows once the outdoor temperature climbs past the indoor one, holding the cooler night air inside. The shutters only need to follow the sun, closing on the exposed side while a shaded orientation stays open to light.

Evening works the same way, and sunset is not automatically the moment to reopen. After a hot day, terraces and walls keep releasing heat for hours, so a simple indoor-outdoor thermometer is more reliable than the clock.

During a long heatwave, the night-time temperature may not fall far enough for the house to release the heat it has stored. Shutters and night ventilation can delay overheating, but they cannot always undo it when the whole area stays hot day after day.

Fans still earn their place, moving air across the skin so comfort improves even when the temperature does not, and a ceiling fan does this quietly across a large room.

What Stores Heat

Some heat comes straight through the windows, and some is absorbed earlier and released slowly by the building itself.

Thick stone walls and terracotta floors have thermal mass: they absorb heat and release it later, helping to steady the temperature in a shaded house that can cool overnight.

But mass does not create coolness. It delays change.

In a long heatwave with warm nights, the structure may stop releasing all it has stored, and the stone that kept the house cool early in the week starts carrying yesterday's warmth into the next morning.

This is why old stone houses are not automatically cool in summer; their comfort depends on shade, ventilation and the chance to cool at night.

Exterior surfaces matter as well. A dark stone or concrete terrace in the western sun becomes intensely hot and keeps radiating toward the glass after sunset, while gravel, planting and paler matte surfaces behave more gently, although colour alone does not determine how a surface performs.

It is worth separating two things here: a pale glossy floor can throw glare without being the hottest surface in the room, and a dark matte terrace can look calm while storing real heat. One is a visual problem and the other is a thermal one, and they are not fixed the same way.

Let Rooms Differ

Not every room has to work equally at every hour.

Older Mediterranean houses were rarely treated as one temperature-controlled volume. People moved through them by orientation, season and time of day, with morning rooms, shaded dining spaces and cooler ground-floor rooms each having their moment.

That logic still works.

An east room may be warm at breakfast and comfortable again by late afternoon, while a western sitting room can be lovely in winter and difficult in summer unless its glazing is protected early.

Furniture should follow this rather than ignore it. A sofa pushed against western glass may photograph well but become unusable every afternoon. Pulling it back from the window or turning the seating away from the opening can improve the room without changing its character.

When the House Itself Needs Work

Routine can manage a great deal, but it cannot correct a weakness in the fabric.

If an upper floor stays unbearable long after the shutters are closed, the problem is more likely the roof than the windows. If a wide western window overheats every afternoon despite the shutters being managed correctly, the opening may need better exterior protection or more suitable glazing.

These are questions about the building itself: roof insulation, exterior shading designed alongside new glazing, and the point at which mechanical cooling becomes necessary. Before Buying Anything

Before ordering blinds, replacing windows or adding a cooling unit, watch the house through one hot day.

Note which windows receive direct sun and at what hour. Then look at what lies immediately outside the largest openings: shaded ground, planting or bare stone in full sun.

Compare the ground floor with the floor above, and notice which room stays cooler and why. Ask whether any shade sits outside the glass or only inside it, and test whether air can actually cross when opposite windows are open.

Most of all, decide whether the whole house needs cooling or whether one well-protected room would meet most of the need.

The answers usually show whether the next step is a change in routine, a furnishing, work on the building or mechanical cooling.

A Simple Summer Routine

A comfortable summer house runs on a rhythm that soon becomes automatic.

In the morning, open opposite windows while the air is still cool, let it move through, then close the windows and shade only the elevations about to take the sun.

Through the afternoon, keep the hottest windows shaded from outside, leave a cooler orientation open to filtered light, and run a fan where people actually sit.

In the evening, check the temperature outside against the inside before opening everything, and once the air has genuinely dropped, ventilate across the house to release the day's heat before bed.
