Air Conditioning in a Mediterranean House: What Works and What Doesn't

Air conditioning is not the enemy of a Mediterranean house. Poorly planned air conditioning is.
The objection is rarely to cooling itself. It is to the white box mounted on the best wall of the room, the unit running all afternoon against an open door, and the assumption that a machine can compensate for a house that was never protected from the sun.
Used well, air conditioning does something quite specific. It handles the nights and the weeks that shade, shutters and ventilation cannot.

Reduce the Load First
A cooling system is sized according to the amount of heat it has to remove. Reduce that heat and everything downstream becomes easier to manage.
Exterior shutters, external blinds, pergolas and other forms of shade reduce the solar gain through the windows. Closing the house while the outside air is hotter than the air inside helps preserve the cooler temperature built up overnight.
With those measures in place, a correctly sized system has far less heat to remove and can maintain a comfortable temperature more efficiently. Without them, the equipment is being asked to compensate continuously for heat that could have been prevented from entering in the first place.
Cooling a house that has not been protected first is an unnecessarily expensive way to solve the problem.
When It Is Necessary
There are conditions that shutters and night ventilation cannot fix.
During a long heatwave, the outside temperature may not fall far enough overnight for the building to release all the heat it has stored. The structure carries part of yesterday's warmth into the next morning, and each day begins from a slightly hotter starting point.
Bedrooms are where this often becomes difficult first. A warm living room in the afternoon may be inconvenient. A bedroom that remains hot at midnight affects sleep, particularly during several consecutive nights of high temperatures.

Air conditioning in an old house raises another question alongside comfort. The building was not designed around ducts, condensate drainage, indoor units and exterior equipment. That is a planning problem, not necessarily a reason to avoid cooling altogether.
Choosing to cool one or two rooms properly is not a failure of principle. It can simply be a sensible response to conditions that passive measures can no longer manage on their own.
Size It Correctly
What size air conditioner do you need? Not one chosen from floor area alone.
The correct size depends on the cooling load of the room. Floor area matters, but so do ceiling height, insulation, orientation, glazing, exterior shade and how the space is used.
A north-facing room with small windows beneath a well-insulated roof may need considerably less cooling than a west-facing room below an uninsulated attic with wide glazed doors.
Oversizing can create problems of its own. A unit that is too large may cool the air very quickly and then switch off before it has run long enough to remove much humidity. The result can be a room that feels cold without feeling particularly comfortable.
Modern inverter systems can reduce their output rather than simply switching fully on and off, so they are less prone to this behaviour than older fixed-speed units. Correct sizing still matters for efficiency, comfort, noise and how steadily the system maintains the room.
Undersizing is easier to recognise. The unit works continuously and still struggles to reach the required temperature.
Proper sizing is worth getting right because the decision is made once and lived with for years.
Cool What You Use
Not every room needs cooling, and rarely all of them at once.
With independent room units or a properly designed zoned system, cooling the spaces that are actually occupied makes more sense than conditioning the entire house to the same temperature.
This also suits the way many Mediterranean houses are naturally used. Different orientations become comfortable at different hours, and people move through the house as the sun moves around it.
A bedroom may need cooling at night while the downstairs rooms do not. A western sitting room may need help late in the afternoon while an eastern room has already recovered.
An entirely open-plan house makes this more difficult, which is worth remembering before removing the last of the internal doors during a renovation.
Ducted or Split
The choice between ducted and wall-mounted split air conditioning is often decided by the building rather than by preference.
A ducted system conceals most of the equipment and distributes conditioned air to several rooms through grilles or diffusers. It needs a suitable route for the ducts, usually through an attic, ceiling void or service area, as well as enough depth to accommodate the system without lowering ceilings unnecessarily.
A wall-mounted split system places an indoor unit in each room it serves. It is usually simpler and less disruptive to install, and it can be introduced one room at a time. The compromise is that the equipment remains visible.
In a house with a usable attic above the rooms that require cooling, a concealed ducted system may justify the additional work. In an older stone house with exposed beams and no ceiling void, forcing ductwork into the architecture can cause more damage than the visible equipment would.

Hide It Properly
Concealed air conditioning is often what people mean when they say they do not want air conditioning.
A ducted or ceiling-concealed system can leave little more than narrow grilles visible in the room. Slim linear diffusers can sit quietly against a plastered ceiling and become part of the architecture rather than a separate object attached to it.
Integrated air conditioning of this kind is easiest to plan during construction or a substantial renovation. It needs space for ducts or equipment, a practical route for drainage, access for servicing and a sensible path for the air to reach each room.
All of those things are easier to solve while ceilings and walls are already open.
Retrofitting the same system into an older house is a different proposition. It may require lowering ceilings, building bulkheads or cutting through historic fabric, which can trade away exactly the character the renovation is meant to preserve. The useful question is therefore not simply whether the equipment can be hidden.
It is what hiding it will cost the room.
When It Shows
Not every house can accommodate concealed cooling, and a visible split unit is the right answer more often than people admit.
If a wall-mounted unit has to remain visible, placement matters more than disguise. Airflow, drainage, clearances and servicing requirements come first. Once those are satisfied, choose the least visually dominant position rather than automatically giving the unit the principal wall of the room.
A unit outside the main sightline is far less intrusive, whatever colour it is.
What does not work is enclosing a standard wall-mounted unit inside decorative joinery. The equipment depends on clear airflow and accessible servicing. Boxing it in can interfere with the way it operates and usually creates a more elaborate visual problem than the original unit.
Good integration comes from treating the system as part of the architecture, not from hiding it behind decoration afterwards.
Plan the Outdoor Unit
Integration does not stop at the indoor unit.
A split or ducted system also needs an outdoor component, and its position affects the façade, the terrace and sometimes the neighbouring rooms just as much as the equipment inside.
The condenser needs clear airflow, access for maintenance and a sensible route for refrigerant pipes, electrical connections and condensate drainage. Hiding it inside a tight decorative enclosure creates the same problem as boxing in an indoor unit. The equipment still needs space around it to work properly.
The route between the indoor and outdoor equipment matters visually too. A discreet interior installation can lose much of its advantage if plastic trunking is then carried across an old stone façade or beside the principal terrace.
Plan the exterior position at the same time as the interior one. Where possible, keep the equipment away from the main sitting terrace and from bedroom windows, and use a less prominent but still serviceable part of the building.
The aim is not to make the equipment impossible to see. It is to keep it from becoming part of the view.
Fans Work Alongside
Fans and air conditioning are not alternatives. They can work well together.
Moving air across the skin improves comfort even when the temperature of the room itself has not changed. This can allow the air-conditioning set point to remain higher while the room still feels comfortable.
A ceiling fan is particularly useful in a larger or high-ceilinged room because it moves air over a wide area without taking up floor space. It can reduce how heavily the room relies on mechanical cooling while keeping the sensation of air movement gentle rather than draughty.
The same principle applies in a bedroom. The aim is not necessarily to make the room cold, but to bring it to a temperature at which the body can rest comfortably.
Before You Install
Before committing to a system, work through the building first.
Check whether exterior shade protects the largest and most exposed windows. If it does not, deal with that before sizing the cooling equipment.
Decide which rooms genuinely need cooling and whether they can be separated from the rest of the house when necessary.
Establish whether the building can accommodate concealed ducting without lowering important ceilings or disturbing original fabric.
Ask where the condensate will drain, where the outdoor unit can sit, how the pipes will reach it and how every part of the system will be accessed for servicing.
If a wall-mounted indoor unit is necessary, stand in the room and look at the walls from the places that matter: the doorway, the bed, the sofa and the dining table. The least visible wall on a floor plan is not always the least noticeable one in real life.
